Country Joe McDonald Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 9 to Mar. 10, 2026.
Joseph Allen McDonald, known the world over as "Country Joe," the singer, songwriter, and unflinching antiwar voice who led Country Joe and the Fish and delivered one of Woodstock's most electrifying moments, died March 7, 2026, at his home in Berkeley, California. He died of complications from Parkinson's disease at the age of 84.

Born on New Year's Day 1942 in Washington, D.C., McDonald grew up in El Monte, California, the son of onetime Communists who named him after Joseph Stalin and steeped him early in music and working-class solidarity. He played trombone in his high school marching band and taught himself folk, country, and blues on guitar while still a teenager. Before he turned twenty, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served three years in Japan, an experience that would shadow his songwriting for decades.

After his discharge, McDonald enrolled at Los Angeles City College, but the pull of Berkeley, California proved stronger. He moved north in the early 1960s, busked on Telegraph Avenue, appeared on the storied public radio station KPFA, and immersed himself in the Free Speech Movement. He founded the underground political magazine Rag Baby, and it was for that publication that he wrote "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag," the darkly comic, furious song that would define him.

In the fall of 1965, organizing around antiwar demonstrations at the Oakland Induction Center, McDonald pressed a four-song EP under the name Country Joe and the Fish. Guitarist Barry Melton co-founded the band alongside him, and the group formalized into a full psychedelic rock outfit that secured a contract with Vanguard Records in 1966.

Their 1967 full-length debut, "Electric Music for the Mind and Body," was a pioneering psychedelic gem that gained momentum steadily, breaking into the Top 40 after a celebrated performance at the Monterey International Pop Festival. Their set at Monterey that year signaled their arrival at the center of San Francisco's transformative music scene, alongside peers including the Grateful Dead, the Jefferson Airplane, and McDonald's onetime girlfriend, Janis Joplin.

The signature moment came in August 1969. McDonald took the Woodstock stage and led nearly half a million people in a profane, defiant call-and-response session – the legendary "Fish Cheer" – before launching into "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag." Captured in the 1970 documentary film, the sequence was seen by audiences worldwide and transformed the song into a defining anthem of Vietnam-era protest. McDonald later told the New York Times he was inspired to write it about soldiers who had no choice but to follow orders, but with the irreverence of rock and roll - essentially punk rock before punk existed.

The band dissolved in 1970. McDonald's solo career never replicated the commercial heights of the Fish years, but he remained creatively restless and morally consistent, releasing more than a dozen studio albums over almost 50 years. His commitment to veterans' causes deepened over the decades: he helped organize the construction of a Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Berkeley, formally unveiled in 1995. He channeled that commitment into on-the-ground organizing, lending his name and presence to groups including Swords to Plowshares, Vietnam Veterans of America, and Vietnam Veterans Against the War.

McDonald is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kathy McDonald; his children Seven McDonald, Devin McDonald, Tara Taylor McDonald, Emily McDonald Primus, and Ryan McDonald; four grandchildren; and his brother, Billy.

Country Joe had profound impact on me at a very early age! I was 9 or maybe 10 years old attending a summer child care program in Oakland circa 1964 -65 ish. The teachers took us on an AC transit bus to UC Berkeley where there was to be a free concert in one of the halls. I remember it seemed very big and the crowd filled the entire place. Out came the band and I think we got through maybe one song before being rushed out of the auditorium. I can't remember if he was singing his famous anti-war anthem then or something else - it was enough for our teachers to pull us out of the concert. Thus was the beginning and first introduction to rock music. I remember thinking he was so damn cool. Our consolation was being taken to Peoples park where there were vegetables growing and Hare Krishna chanting with incense burning. I will never forget that day!

Joe dated my sister Charmaine Dern for a number of years during high school. He was almost always at our dinner table eating, playing his guitar and singing songs.

I saw Joe in the Berkeley Amphitheater some time in the '70s. Great performance. I particularly remember the call and response spell-out with the sound of the crowd resonating many, many blocks away. "Gimme an F !! . . . . .

Rest in Strength.

My brothers, sisters, and I grew up is 1950's El Monte. Ca with the McDonalds. They had an egg ranch and sold eggs from a truck that played "Old McDonald has a Farm". All of the neighborhood bought their eggs. They were very good eggs. We used to swim at the old quarry off of Peck Road and at the riverbed. It was a lovely little town.

Thank you for all the memories and rest in paradise. You will be remembered.

A music legend with a desire to make the world a better place. I met him at the Robin 2 club in Bilston, a modest and charming man. He signed the tour poster I bought while we chatted about Electric Music For The Mind and Body. RIP Joe you will be sorely missed.

We would see Joe in the east bay fairly often and he just blended in with the crowd. I remember our English teacher " Mrs. Brown " would let us bring an album into class on Tuesdays to listen to while we studied and I brought in CJMCD's " fish cheer ". Needless to say that by the time the " spelling lesson " we all got from Joe reached "C" , Mrs. Brown scrambled for the record player, laid a big scratch across the album with the needle " SCREETCHHHHH " , and Mrs. Brown would no longer all me to bring an album to school on Tuesdays . God Bless ya Country Joe. My life is better because of you and your music. The bay area music scene was the pulse of the nation, and you were one of the many arteries .

I graduated from high school in 1969. There was so much upheaval in the country. I had been living with the Vietnam War my entire teenage years. Country Joe´s Rag about the war really hit home for me. Then as the fates happened. I was drafted. This scared teenager was truly glad that Joe McDonald and other anti war musicians were doing what they could through song to help us soldiers.Thank you Joe McDonald. Rest in peace.

Loved, loved watching Country Joe in Berkeley. Worked in Sproul Hall at UCB and he was often on campus for the noon rallies. Terrific entertainer and just so many great memories of those days. Bless you, Joe.
